Types of Anesthesia

This type of anesthesia allows the patient to remain conscious without experiencing any pain associated with the procedure. The anesthetic is directly administered in and around the surgical site for localized numbness. It is commonly used with other anesthetic options, such as nitrous oxide.

Nitrous oxide (also known as laughing gas) is inhaled through the mouth and nose to help the patient feel relaxed throughout the procedure. It helps the patient feel more at ease, especially if they are nervous about their procedure. Local anesthesia is often used in conjunction with nitrous oxide.

A common option for wisdom teeth and dental implant patients, IV sedation allows the patient to enter a sleep-like state for the duration of the procedure. It is a quick-acting medicine because it is administered directly into a vein. Most patients who opt for IV sedation do not remember the procedure afterward, a common side effect.

Procedures that require general anesthesia in a surgery center or hospital are usually more complex and extensive in nature. A patient is completely unconscious under general anesthesia. An anesthesiologist will administer this type of anesthesia.
